A History of DMS

DMS (Cumbria) Ltd - formerly known as Dunglinson Micro Systems moved from Brunstock to newly refurbished premises on the Kingstown Industrial Estate. It is a move in keeping with the progress the firm has made over the past 10 years, and reflects the continued expansion of this go-ahead company.

In 1959 Danny Dunglinson worked as an agricultural machinery salesman for County Motors in Carlisle. At that time he decided to go it alone and started selling small electrical appliances to the local farming community.

The seeds of the future dms (Cumbria) Ltd computer company were sown at that point.

Danny was an electronics radar operator during the war and he had a deep interest in this embryonic industry.

However, the business really started to grow when Cumbrian farmers began to install sophisticated bulk milk cooling vats and milking machines in 1964. From then on Dunglinson's became one of the largest suppliers of this equipment in Cumbria.

After Danny's untimely death in 1973 Michael, his son, continued the business and revived his father's interest in electronics by diversifying into the computer business in 1982.

During 1984 Paul Murphy, a young school leaver at the time, joined the company and he quickly identified that software was the way to go.

Computers were clever even then but they were of no practical use to local companies without programmes written for their specific business, this still holds true today. But Paul had an innate ability to write programmes and computers took off.

By 1990 this part of Dunglinson's business had outgrown its departmental status within the larger agricultural business and it was decided to form a separate company, which could specialize and serve its diverse customer base more professionally.

Paul became a partner in Dunglinson Micro Systems working alongside Michael and Michael's sister Joan Baugh.

During 1997 the farming industry was such that Michael Dunglinson found it much more difficult to cope with the management of two companies. DMS were now installing software and highly sophisticated networked computer systems on a national basis for businesses large and small.

At this time Michael decided to retire and concentrate his efforts on his farm supply business, so allowing DMS a completely free hand to really concentrate on what was by now a totally commercial customer base.

Eventually DMS outgrew the small offices they were renting from G D & M Dunglinson at Brunstock near Carlisle and the decision was made to relocate to new premises on the Kingstown Industrial Estate. The company also went limited with a view to further expansion.
